3) The Departure Discussed

And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was altered,  and his clothing became dazzling white. (Luke 9:29)

And behold, two men were talking with him, Moses and Elijah, who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. (Lk 9:30-31)

1. WHO are they?

And behold, two men were talking with him, Moses and Elijah (v. 30)

For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. (John 1:17)

“Please show me your glory.” (Ex 33:18)

“you cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live.” (Ex 33:20)

And as they still went on and talked, behold, chariots of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. (2 Kings 2:11)

“Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes. And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction.” (Mal 4:5-6)

2. WHAT are they wearing?

who appeared in glory (verse 31)

So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable. It is sown in dishonour; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power. It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.  (1 Cor 15:42-44)

Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy, to the only God, our Saviour, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen. (Jude 24-25)

3. WHY are they here?

spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.   (verse 31)

that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. (Matt 16:21)

For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the LORD. The blood shall be a sign for you, on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you, when I strike the land of Egypt.   (Exodus 12:12-13)

And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment (Hebrews 9:27)

For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. (2 Cor 5:21)
