6) “It is finished”

John 19:16b-30

“Woman, behold your son” … “Behold, your mother” “I thirst.”  “It is finished,” John 19:26-27, 28, 30

1. The mission is finished

For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me. John 6:38

“Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” Luke 22:42

After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” John 19:28

When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. John 19:30

God raised him up Acts 2:24

2. Sin is finished

as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.” Romans 3:10-12

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9

But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, … having been set free from sin Romans 6:17-18

3. Death is finished

For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.  1 Corinthians 15:22 & Romans 6:23

“O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:55-57

“It is finished” John 19:30
