8) The Jews, pt 3

Romans 3:1-7

The Jews are guilty

The Jews are stubborn

The Jews are hypocrites

The Jews are flakey

What advantage has the Jew?

Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the value of circumcision? (verse 1)

For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. For they have no pangs until death; their bodies are fat and sleek. They are not in trouble as others are; they are not stricken like the rest of mankind. (Psalm 73:3-5)

until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I discerned their end. Truly you set them in slippery places; you make them fall to ruin.   (Ps 73:17-18)

Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the value of circumcision? (verse 1)

Much in every way. To begin with, the Jews were entrusted with the oracles of God. (verse 2)

What if some were unfaithful?

What if some were unfaithful? Does their faithlessness nullify the faithfulness of God?  (verse 3)

By no means! Let God be true though every one were a liar, as it is written, “That you may be justified in your words, and prevail when you are judged.”  (verse 4)

Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment.  (Ps 51:4)

The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.  (Lam 3:22-23)

And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’ (Acts 2:21)

If our unrighteousness serves to show …

But if our unrighteousness serves to show the righteousness of God, what shall we say? That God is unrighteous to inflict wrath on us? (I speak in a human way.)   (verse 5)

By no means! For then how could God judge the world? (verse 6)

But if through my lie God's truth abounds to his glory, why am I still being condemned as a sinner? And why not do evil that good may come?—as some people slanderously charge us with saying. Their condemnation is just. (verses 7-8)
