4) The Gospel
Romans 1:8-17
Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God (verse 1)
declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead (verse 4)
So I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome. (verse 15)
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.” (vs. 16-17)
It’s a personal statement
For I am not ashamed of the gospel (verse 16)
Five times I received at the hands of the Jews the forty lashes less one. Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I was adrift at sea; on frequent journeys, in danger from rivers, danger from robbers, danger from my own people, danger from Gentiles, danger in the city, danger in the wilderness, danger at sea, danger from false brothers; in toil and hardship, through many a sleepless night, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure. (2 Cor 11:24-27)
It’s a powerful statement
for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. (verse 16)
I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that I have often intended to come to you … in order that I may reap some harvest among you as well as among the rest of the Gentiles. (verse 13)
For they themselves report concerning us the kind of reception we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come. (1 Thess 1:9-10)
And a number of those who had practiced magic arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted the value of them and found it came to fifty thousand pieces of silver. (Acts 19:19)
It’s a proven statement
For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.” (v. 17)
“Behold, his soul is puffed up; it is not upright within him, but the righteous shall live by his faith. (Habakkuk 2:4)
