21) The Confirmation

Romans 8:1-17

The Confirmation we receive

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.   (verses 1-2)

For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.  (vs. 3-4)

The Choice we make

For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.   (verse 5)

So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. (verse 12)

Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.  (Col 3:2)

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. (Phil 4:8)

We have been given the Spirit

For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons,  by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”   (verse 15)

Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.   (1 Cor 6:19-20)

We are God’s children

The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God (verse 16)

See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. (1 Jn 3:1)

We are heirs of God

and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ (verse 17)
