16) The free gift

Romans 5:12-21

Adam (vs. 12-14)

“Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; (Gen 3:17-18)

Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. (Rom 5:12-13)

Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come.  (verse 14)

Christ (vs. 15-21)

But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God's grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many!  (verse 15)

Nor can the gift of God be compared with the result of one man's sin: The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and brought justification. (verse 16)

  Grace not sin

  Justification not condemnation

Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. (verse 18)

And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” (Gen 2:16-17)

  Life not death

For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God's abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!  (verse 17)

who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification. (Rom 4:25)

  Righteousness not disobedience

For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. (1 Cor 15:22)

For as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous. (verse 19)

Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.  (verses 20-21)
