12) The Examples

Romans 3:27-4:25

For, “Yet a little while, and the coming one will come and will not delay; but my righteous one shall live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him.” (Heb 10:37-38)

For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”   (Romans 1:17)

David

For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment. Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.   (Psalm 51:3-5)

Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!  (Ps 139:23-24)

Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man against whom the LORD counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit. (Ps 32:1-2)

I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity;  I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,” and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah (Psalm 32:5)

For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will not be pleased with a burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. (Psalm 51:16-17)

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God (Ephesians 2:8)

And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness (Romans 4:5)

Abraham

For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.” (verse 3)

Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due.  (verse 4)

And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness,  (verse 5)

Saved not by circumcision

Is this blessing then only for the circumcised, or also for the uncircumcised? For we say that faith was counted to Abraham as righteousness. How then was it counted to him? Was it before or after he had been circumcised? (verse 10)

Saved not by law

For the law brings wrath, but where there is no law there is no transgression. (verse 15)

That is why it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his offspring—not only to the adherent of the law but also to the one who shares the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all (verse 16)

Saved by faith

For the promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith. (verse 13)
