“He who has an ear”

“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” (Rev 2:7, 11, 17, 29 & Rev 3:6, 13, 22)

1. The churches

He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. (Rev 2:7)

But I have a few things against you: you have some there who hold the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, so that they might eat food sacrificed to idols and practice sexual immorality. So also you have some who hold the teaching of the Nicolaitans. (Rev 2:14-15)

Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts, as at Meribah, as on the day at Massah in the wilderness, when your fathers put me to the test and put me to the proof, … (Psalm 95:2-9)

The words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand, who walks among the seven golden lampstands. (Rev 2:1)

“‘I know your tribulation and your poverty (but you are rich) and the slander of those who say that they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan. Do not fear what you are about to suffer. (Rev 2:9-10)

“‘I know where you dwell, where Satan's throne is. Yet you hold fast my name, and you did not deny my faith even in the days of Antipas my faithful witness, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells. But I have a few things against you: you have some there who hold the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, so that they might eat food sacrificed to idols and practice sexual immorality. (Rev 2:14-15)

For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.” It is for discipline that you have to endure.   God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline?  (Heb 12:6-7)

The one who conquers and who keeps my works until the end, to him I will give authority over the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron, as when earthen pots are broken in pieces, even as I myself have received authority from my Father. (Rev 2:26-27)

2. The Church

He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. (Rev 2:7)

They have mouths, but do not speak; eyes, but do not see.  (Ps 115:5)

and his voice was like the roar of many waters (Rev 1:15)

For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.  (2 Tim 4:3-4)

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”  (Ps 46:10)

“Speak, for your servant hears.”   (1 Sam 3:10)
